In 2020 the newest version of the Microsoft Surface Laptop will be released, while Dell is working on a laptop that could possibly replace it by then. We also take a look at how our laptops have changed over time and compare them to what’s expected for this year.

With the rise of laptop gaming, laptops are becoming more powerful than ever. The Surface Laptop 3 is one of the best options for gamers on a budget, while Dell’s XPS 13 (2020) offers incredible customization and performance in an ultra-thin package.

The “microsoft surface laptop 4 vs dell xps 13” is a comparison of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 and Dell XPS 13. The Surface Laptop 3 features an Intel Core i7-8650U processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD storage, and Windows 10 Pro. The Dell XPS 13 features an Intel Core i5-8200Y processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD storage, and Windows 10 Home.

We put the Dell XPS 13 to the test and compared it against the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 in terms of performance, display quality, price, battery life, portability, and other factors.

The rankings with results can be seen above, while the in-depth reports on the two office laptops can be found below.

The Dell XPS 13 comes in first place.

  • Best Results in the Office and in the Classroom!
  • Beautiful Presentation & Design
  • Keyboard that is easy to use
  • Surface Laptop 3 is more costly.

We’ve used the new Dell XPS 13 laptop as our second primary computer for a little over two months now. As a result, it’s now time for the first written report, in which we’ll present the gadget together with all of its benefits and drawbacks.

Especially in terms of how well this computer suits online nomads and long-term trips as a working tool.

We’ll constantly come back to the parallels and contrasts to the MacBook Air since we still use it as a second primary computer and because I find the comparison between a well tuned Windows machine and a comparable Apple device fascinating.

So let’s start from the outside and work our way in.

Design

The Dell XPS 13 is significantly lighter than the current MacBook Air, at 2.71 pounds. It is also slimmer and shorter than the MacBook Air with the same display size, thanks to the so-called Infinity Edge display.

Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

There are no dark, unused edges on an infinity edge display since the whole screen is utilised for the display save for a few millimeters at the edge. Naturally, this reduces space and weight, which is a significant benefit with this computer.

The only drawback is with regards to the web cam, but we’ll get to that later. The Dell XPS 13’s precise measurements are as follows:

The Dell XPS 13 is a dependable and well-made laptop. It’s solid, doesn’t wobble or rattle, and has no outward defects to be concerned about. There is already a long list of advantages to this.

Especially considering, over the last five years, I’ve used a variety of Windows laptops, none of which have come close to this level of performance. Nonetheless, there are two minor issues where we must make a deduction.

The touchpad is the first. It’s also well-made and rests solidly in the anchoring without rattling or clattering. When you push it down, though, it creates unreasonably loud clicking sounds. This is certainly inconvenient and, as previously said, could have been fully avoided.

It’s the same with the space bar, which, like the other keys, creates a significantly louder noise. To be honest, this superfluous noise was included into the current MacBook as well, however it was not noticed in previous models.

Why this is done is a mystery to me, and as I already said, it is a minor detail. However, it is nonetheless one that draws unwelcome attention.

The 4K version of the Dell XPS 13 features a touchscreen, which means the screen must be able to endure repeated finger nudges without shifting. That is precisely what it does. It even stands so still that when you tap straight on the touchpad, it just wiggles its fingers slightly. When you swipe it, it practically doesn’t respond at all.

1632848015_242_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

The second benefit is that, even while shaking or wobbling, the screen does not move out of the previously established position on its own. If you want to use the computer while traveling via rail, vehicle, or bus, this is very crucial.

Anyone who works on the road often understands how aggravating it is to have to continually adjust the screen since it is always going backwards due to the vibrations. With the Dell XPS 13, you won’t have this issue. The screen is stationary and only moves when you intentionally cause it to.

In this computer, Dell has also handled the mix of an aluminum chassis and fiberglass quite well. The XPS13 is composed of metal on the exterior, like Apple’s notebooks, and so provides much more stability than most other laptops.

Apart from that, it is, without a doubt, elegant. Unlike MacBooks, the XPS13 is built from the inside out, so when it’s opened, it’s constructed of an extremely durable fiberglass fabric rather than metal. Apart from the fact that it acts as a design style feature and provides the Dell its own distinct personality, it also offers several benefits over the all-aluminum variant.

For one reason, the fiberglass cloth is less sensitive to temperature than metal. That means it doesn’t get as chilly in cold weather and doesn’t get as hot in hot weather, which is perhaps more comfortable for the hands.

1632848016_76_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

It’s also softer and more pleasant to wear on the skin. The major benefit is that the Dell design has slightly rounded edges, which prevents the laptop from cutting into the bottom portion of the palm of the hand while writing for extended periods of time, as the harsh, sharp edge of the MacBook does.

To summarize, Dell’s design follows Apple’s lead in certain ways, but it also stands apart enough to let its product stand on its own without seeming to be a knockoff.

Dell has created a look and feel that can easily keep up with Apple’s competition while leaving most Windows competitors cold. Mac issues have been identified and improved with their own solutions, so Dell has created a look and feel that can easily keep up with Apple’s competition while leaving most Windows competitors cold.

Ports

Normal USB ports and an SD card slot have been eliminated on the latest XPS14 in compared to its predecessor, which is a minor drawback. Instead, there are two ThunderboltTM 3 connectors and a USB-C 3.1 port on the device.

The laptop can be charged by all three connections, and it’s possible that external hard drives and other devices could soon adopt USB-C connectors as well.

1632848017_680_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

There will, of course, be no more drawbacks. However, because of the tiny USB ports, most USB peripherals must be utilized with an adapter. This implies that the weight advantage is nullified, since whatever you bring with you adds to your total weight.

But that’s not all. You want to avoid having a lot of little pieces with you, especially while traveling, since you don’t want to lose them. No matter where you place your head, a built-in USB port stays in the computer.

An adapter cable that is just a few centimetres long, on the other hand, vanishes rapidly. Then there’s the issue of finding a new job, which might be incredibly difficult or even impossible depending on your present situation.

In this sense, I recall our hikes across the Balkans or through Romania and Bulgaria, for example. It was like seeking for a needle in a haystack to find a shopping center with an electronics store here.

With the purchase of the XPS13, Dell includes an adaptor from a standard USB socket to USB-C. However, if you want to use all three USB ports, you’ll need to purchase an additional converter connector.

In my view, the fact that the self-service card slot has been replaced with a slot for tiny SD cards is also a drawback. Because most cameras nowadays still utilize standard SD cards.

So you’re back to the second extra adapter, and you’re now carrying more weight than you would have if the connections had been incorporated into the computer straight away. A Mini-SB to SB adaptor card, on the other hand, is significantly lighter and simpler to keep.

A connector for headphones or external loudspeakers, as well as the well-known Dell battery display consisting of a push button and five LEDs, are included in addition to the previously stated connections.

Given how much space has been saved in the port area for weight and size reduction, it could have been more practical to leave out the battery display and instead insert an SD card slot. This would have taken up less space in the same location and been much more useful.

Touchpad & Keyboard

The keyboard, as indicated at the outset, is likewise well-made and enjoyable to use. It’s a keyboard designed to compose large texts in one sitting, and we owe Dell a debt of gratitude for that. Especially because many laptops have recently begun skimping on the keyboard.

1632848018_974_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

Apple has even intentionally weakened its keyboard, which was unrivaled for many years, to the point that it is now a serious deficiency in the current MacBook Air and Mac Book Mini models. Dell merely slogs a little with the space bar, as previously stated.

This is unique and needlessly loud for some reason. All other keys, on the other hand, provide a regular typing noise and a comfortable typing experience. It isn’t a whisper keyboard, but it outperforms the majority of its rivals.

Another benefit, which we like, is the lighting of the keys. This is especially useful for travelers, since you’ll almost always find yourself in a scenario where you have to or want to work in the dark, whether it’s twilight or utter darkness.

For example, in Romania, I spent several hours writing our book and was forced to wear a light, which was both uncomfortable and attracted a lot of mosquitoes. With this technology, this would not have occurred to me.

Working with the DEL XPS13 is possible even in full darkness, which is fantastic for travelers! I have never seen a screen lighting of this quality on a Windows machine before.

Many computers, particularly those attempting to be as small as possible, have a nonsensical key layout. It might be that the backspace key was halved to make way for something else, or that you don’t have access to a control or shift key.

Fortunately, the XPS13 is free of such foolishness. The Page Up and Page Down buttons above the Left and Right Arrow keys are the only thing that annoys me.

You grow accustomed to them with time, but they constantly create mistakes, particularly when writing rapidly and instinctively, since it’s far easier to move the mouse one page up or down than of one character left or right.

It would have been much more convenient to just leave the top portions of the arrow keys unoccupied and assign the “page up/down” actions to the arrow keys through the FN key. After a brief time of getting accustomed to it, this would have been just as natural, but it would have avoided misunderstanding.

The keyboard is almost as excellent as that of previous MacBooks, and much superior to that of the company’s current rivals.

1632848019_675_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

The touchpad is fantastic for a Windows computer, with the exception of the little too loud clicking noise when pushing the button, which is too loud for my liking. It is, without a doubt, the greatest touchpad I have ever used on a Windows PC.

Most mouse motions are also useful and operate properly, and it scrolls smoothly and with a high degree of accuracy. Nonetheless, in terms of precision, it still falls short of an Apple touchpad. Here’s the key question: why is this the case.

Because there’s no reason why a touchpad on an Apple computer works 99.999 percent accurately and without errors, but only roughly 96 percent on a computer like this. Don’t get me wrong: I think it’s great! Although 96 percent is excellent and it is an excellent touchpad, there will always be little wobbles or slides that may be unpleasant in the long term.

This is a shame, since the gadget is otherwise a fully functional equipment with which you can work efficiently and successfully in picture and video editing.

Mouse movements

  • The mouse motions, on the other hand, which may be utilized instinctively and are also employed often and cheerfully, can be noticed positively:
  • Swipe two fingers over the mousepad to scroll in the other way.
  • Zoom feature is activated by moving two fingers away from or towards each other.
  • With three fingers, wipe left and right: Change between the various application windows
  • With three fingers, wipe upwards: Display your work in a creative way.
  • Using three fingers, wipe down: Display the desktop.
  • If several virtual desktops are set up, four-finger wiping left and right will transition between them.

Display

Nothing can be said about the presentation itself at first. The depth of field is unrivaled, and the colors are vibrant and vivid, practically radiating towards you.

It’s a lot of fun to work with photographs and movies! I’d also want to attract attention to the concept of an infinite edge display. Every millimeter of the laptop lid is used in this case. It is just impossible to have a superior screen-to-body ratio.

However, the fact that it has a glossy display offers both benefits and drawbacks. The brightness, richness of the colors, and clarity of the screen are all evident advantages. As a result, it’s easy to see why practically all laptop makers now solely employ high-gloss screens. The drawback is that, as the name implies, a high-gloss display also functions very well as a mirror.

In other words, as soon as a light source shines on the screen from behind you, it reflects the surroundings as perfectly and brilliantly as it should represent what’s going on within the computer.

When the atmosphere is particularly bright, this makes working with the laptop a little more difficult. Even though matt displays don’t reflect light, there’s no assurance that you’ll see more if you work in direct sunlight.

1632848020_221_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

I’ve had no difficulties using the XPS13 outside, even in the summer in Italy, when everything is constantly bright. The only thing that matters is that you pick a spot in the shade, which you should do anyway while working on a computer.

The 4K resolution is the second aspect that may be scrutinized. There’s no denying that it’s extraordinarily bright and crisp. Nonetheless, when compared to Full HD resolution, the screen size difference is minimal.

This would not be an issue on its own, but keep in mind that the 4K version has four times the number of pixels as the Full HD version. This, of course, requires a lot more energy, which has a detrimental impact on battery life.

As a result, the issue is whether the modest improvement in appearance is worth the loss of independence in terms of the amount of time you can work without electricity. Although we have only had the opportunity to test the 4K version, we have heard and read from a variety of sources that people who have tested both prefer the Full-HD version.

Another benefit is that the Full-HD display is much brighter than the 4K version, making working in bright environments or outside much simpler.

Of course, keep in mind that we’re talking about a laptop with a 13-inch diagonal screen, not a massive flat-screen TV that takes up half the room. The difference between Full-HD and 4K on such a gadget is, of course, evident. On this scale, though, the decision in favor of longer battery life is arguably the smarter one.

1632848021_318_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

On the other hand, the touch feature, which enables you to actively interfere in what’s going on on the screen, should be praised. You may navigate, zoom, highlight, and choose items, among other things. The only thing I miss is the ability to use a touchscreen to navigate through text pages.

Touching the screen with your finger marks the touched lines. With two fingers, though, nothing occurs. A two-finger scroll feature would be useful and practical in this situation. Only as a suggestion for future editions.

Sound

Here’s where Dell makes an exceedingly disappointing and, in my opinion, avoidable misstep in the general design of this machine.

There’s a lot of effort put into improving the visual experience, with a glossy display in a precisely scaled widescreen format, the greatest color representation, and the highest resolution currently possible, and then you get two pitiful 1 watt speakers.

Why? Why is Apple manage to provide you with cinema sound that would make any television set green with jealousy, while you receive a sound experience comparable to a Gameboy for the same price?

To put it another way, it’s like making a mobile version of a wonderful home theater, but instead of a sound system, you use an old, scratchy kitchen radio. If you had spent a little more money here, the Dell would have been ideal for a relaxing video evening after work. But in this case, one gets a visual cinema experience but no audio one, which doesn’t make sense.

1632848022_617_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

Yes, the loudspeakers function, and they’re also enough for making Skype or similar calls. You may also listen to music or view movies or YouTube clips with them. However, it will just be “OK” and not an experience. There is no loudness, and there is no rich, round, expansive sound that is pleasing to the ear.

When you consider what the SPX13 can achieve, this is understandable, but as I have said, it’s a shame. Because the computer might have been a first-class multimedia device with a bit more quality at this point. And this is something we have sadly overlooked up to this point.

Webcam

Actually, this chapter should be named Web-Cams, since Dell includes an infrared camera in addition to the standard Web-Cam that allows for facial recognition login through “Windows Hello.” As far as I could tell, this camera cannot be utilized as a thermal imaging camera in the dark, contrary to popular belief.

The standard webcam, on the other hand, is so brilliant that even in full darkness, the screen brightness is adequate for a good video conversation.

The camera isn’t designed to capture artistic or high-quality photos, but that’s not its purpose. It’s also fully enough for the basic activities for which a web cam is often required, such as video conferencing.

The placement of the camera, which is not at the top of the screen as it usually is, but below it, is a bit unfavorable. This was most likely owing to the fact that the Infinity Edge display had taken up all of the space at the top.

1632848023_682_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

The bad side effect is that one now films one’s face from the viewpoint of a frog, which provides for some profound and unwelcome insights into one’s own nose. Fortunately, Dell compensates for this flaw by selecting a picture detail that is quite big.

As a result, one can only see a tiny portion of one’s body in the center, and the nasal passages are also not very big and plainly apparent. It’s also unpleasant that your own hands are recorded as soon as you press the keys.

The Dell XPS 13 doesn’t allow for secret typing, such as to speak with pals during a professional video conference. Dell seems to be a strong supporter of honesty and integrity in this area. On the other hand, it must be mentioned that this video viewpoint also provides a sense of majesty and force.

You resemble those rappers who have their album covers taken in an armchair with a walking stick and a heavy fur coat to make them appear like mafiosos. Who knows whether this has an unanticipated beneficial impact on those who are normally shy.

Noise level of fans

The first advantage is that the fan is seldom turned on, which means that the computer is generally absolutely quiet. Even in hot weather, this isn’t the case. We tested it in rooms that were above 35°C for some of the time. And it was still silent.

When the fan first turns on, it’s already rather loud and irritating. The ventilation grill on the bottom is also a drawback for a travel laptop. When working outdoors, you must be extremely cautious not to set it on unclean surfaces.

Dust, filth, and moisture may enter the device via ventilation holes located at the bottom of the casing.

1632848024_284_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

It’s also not a good idea to work on your lap while it’s hot outside. We still don’t know whether this will be an issue or if it has the potential to become one, but we don’t want to find out for as long as possible.

Charging & Battery Life

In order to minimize weight and space, the battery has been lowered from 60 watt hours to 52 watt hours when compared to the predecessor.

This is a risky option, since although weight is always an issue, particularly for backpackers and travelers, no one wants to spend a few more pounds for a reduced battery life. This is one of the reasons why, before to receiving the laptop, we had heard a lot of complaints regarding the battery life.

Particularly with relation to the 4K display, which according to some reviewers should be a true power hog. And sure, after a month of testing, we can confidently state that there is still room for growth in terms of battery life.

The fact that the 4K display reduces battery life seems self-evident to me, but since I only had the 4K version, I couldn’t test it in a direct comparison.

What I can say is that when I first tested the laptop’s battery life in constant usage, I was pleasantly pleased. Because my particular test result was not nearly as negative as I had been told it would be.

In most test results, a maximum runtime of 5 hours was mentioned, which was decreased to a single hour while executing sophisticated applications. I am unable to confirm both. As previously said, the battery life is not ideal.

I had additional equipment that allowed me to operate for ten to twelve hours without the need of a power wire. When I use W-LAN, Firefox, Skype in conversation mode, and Word, the XPS13 pushes it up to 8 hours on average.

I normally leave the display on maximum brightness and have numerous tabs in several windows open for research (and to avoid causing mayhem), which I flip back and forth between. As a result, you can’t say I’m very energy-conscious. Close any superfluous tabs and windows with the screen brightness decreased.

1632848025_440_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

The available battery life is obviously decreased while running huge, very energy-intensive applications, but this is to be expected. You’ll still get 3 to 4 hours depending on what you’re working with.

In conclusion, I’d say that although the battery life might be greater, it’s still enough for a 4K display.

A few remarks concerning the charger and power source at this time. I was ecstatic to see that the XPS13 can be charged through USB-C connections and that this is feasible via all portals, regardless of which port is favored. For the first time in laptop history, the well-known issue of the power plug being on the wrong side of the laptop removes the cord being either too short or a tripping hazard.

Furthermore, the USB charging option enables the computer to be charged using solar sails or their temporary storage batteries without any extra issues. This is another benefit that helps to compensate for the reduced battery life.

Dell’s approach for the charger itself was quite disappointing to me. In comparison to the weight of the laptop, it’s a very thick and hefty block. It also consists of three components that are joined in an odd manner.

The socket is reached through a stout, circular power cord with a round connector. The cable then terminates at an adaptor box, from which a small USB cable connects to the PC.

The connection between the box and the USB cord seems to be detachable and is only held together by a connector. This, however, is not the case. As a result, it’s just a brittle spot where the wire may easily bend. As a result, the situation seems to be approaching a preset breaking point, which will almost certainly result in issues sooner or later.

1632848026_354_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

This is a shame, since the laptop, along with everything else, is made so well that you won’t have to worry about it being damaged prematurely.

Also, owing to the high voltage created by the adapter, one is once again reliant on this one particular charger, despite the fact that the USB connection provides the appearance that one is now free to charge the laptop with anything a USB cable can handle. If you use a regular USB charger, however, you will just see the notification that it is not the original and hence insufficient to charge the XPS13.

Other, more practical options would have been available. A second USB C port on the other end of the cable, for example, would have already allowed it to be used as an external hard drive connection cable as well as a tablet or smartphone connection cable.

The length of the wire, on the other hand, must be recorded. Even if the power outlet is not immediately next to the desk, this is plenty to move about comfortably.

Performance

After a month of use, we can state that this equipment has exceeded our expectations. Everything we tried went easily, and we had no trouble with picture or video editing. We haven’t attempted gaming since we just use the computer as a business tool and as a TV substitute on occasion.

Other testers have informed us that the XPS13 can be used for gaming as well, but that it isn’t very good at it. It’s not meant to work that way. It’s designed to be a work tool rather than a gaming machine, and it excels at it.

1632848027_357_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

What we couldn’t compare was the difference between the ordinary edition with 8GB RAM and the premium version with 16GB RAM. Other testers agreed that this version is adequate to operate most common apps up to and including picture editing. This is a possibility, but as I already said, we cannot be certain. Our MacBook, too, has just 8GB of RAM and leaves a lot to be desired in terms of picture and video editing.

The XPS, on the other hand, is much speedier in many ways. If the additional eight GB RAM is too costly, you can purchase a capable PC without it. A calculator that allows you to operate at a high level and that you will love using.

However, the 16GB version is unquestionably more enjoyable in the long term. Especially when you consider that programs tend to grow in size and memory use, rather than shrinking and becoming more compact.

Verdict

Overall, the Dell XPS 13 is a fantastic gadget that we like working on. It blends elegance with a sturdy, durable finish, and it comes with all of the features you’d expect from a decent laptop.

Despite minor defects in appearance that lead you to moan at the highest level, we offer the item a final rating of “Very excellent!”

It’s a PC that we can wholeheartedly endorse. It’s also great for long-term travelers and online nomads, which is why the Dell XPS 13 beats over the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 for first place.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is ranked second.

1632848027_165_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

  • In battery mode, performance is quite steady and unrestricted.
  • a better deal than the Dell XPS 13
  • Long-lasting battery
  • There isn’t a card reader or a Thunderbolt 3 port.

The new Surface Laptop 3 from Microsoft is primarily a model update for the laptop line, but the company has made some intriguing improvements and added a 15-inch option. Regardless, we gave the 13-inch a go and found it to be rather decent, if not faultless.

Microsoft’s Surface laptop line has comprised of a 13-inch and a 15-inch model, which are comparable in many ways, since the beginning of October. The ports and the batteries, for example, are the same size, and there are all-metal alternatives as well as variants with Alcantara upholstery.

In terms of CPUs, Microsoft uses AMD processors in the consumer 15-inch model, while Intel’s newest core chips are used in the 13-inch model — this also applies to the corporate 15-inch model.

Ports & Design

Apart from the metal surface, they are almost identical to the previous version in terms of design, but the design team lead by Ralf Gröne has fulfilled a customer request: the devices may be screwed on, for example, to replace the built-in SSD with a bigger one.

1632848028_910_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

Only four Torx Plus screws, concealed under the rubber feet on the bottom, must be removed to do this, as Ifixit reveals in the disassembly. The top panel, including the keyboard, may be readily removed after unscrewing, revealing the inside.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft forbids the SSD from being changed haphazardly; instead, it should be replaced “by a certified technician according to the instructions supplied by Microsoft,” as he adds on the product page’s footnotes. Because the memory is soldered, it cannot be changed.

The Surface Laptop 3 is top-of-the-line and feels like it, yet being reasonably simple to fix. Nothing flexes even if you lift it at the case’s corner. It’s also commendable that the display flap may be opened with one hand without requiring the remainder of the device to be fixed.

1632848029_942_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

Regrettably, this is not the case for all laptops. Even if Microsoft doesn’t want to hear it, it seems like Microsoft has taken some design cues from Apple’s Macbook, which isn’t a terrible thing. After all, Apple is (or was) recognized for producing high-quality laptops.

However, Microsoft went a little too far with the amount of ports on the left side of the chassis, with just one USB type A (USB 3.2 Gen1) and (for the first time) one USB C (USB 3.2 Gen2) port.

A surface connector for fast charging and a 3.5 millimeter audio jack are located on the right side of the case. Microsoft could have done a little more here, particularly as the USB-C connector does not support the Thunderbolt 3 standard.

1632848030_869_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

Smartphones may be charged or a display can be connected through the USB-C connector in addition to other accessories – depending on the connection, an adapter is needed, which is not included in the scope of supply.

If you don’t have the Surface-Connector, you may charge your laptop via the socket. You can even use a high-capacity battery pack to charge the Surface Laptop.

Touchpad / Keyboard / Display

Microsoft has chosen a 3:2 aspect ratio for the display, which is great for office activities. Two Word documents, Excel files, or webpages may be shown side by side thanks to the aspect ratio. When video material or games are presented in full screen mode, they are frequently framed by a black bar at the top and bottom.

The 13.5-inch display’s visual quality is superb, with a resolution of 2,256 x 1,504 pixels (201 ppi). Even when seen from a sharp angle, it is wonderfully bright and easy to read.

1632848031_556_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

Content cannot be viewed properly in backlight or direct sunshine since it is not anti-reflective. However, the Surface Laptop 3 must share this complaint with many other modern laptops.

The screen may be controlled not just with a keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, but also with up to ten fingers or the Surface Pen (which must be bought separately).

When it comes to input, the built-in keyboard is fantastic, with a nice pressure point and a short key travel. The trackpad is likewise improving, with proportions and accuracy approaching that of Apple’s Macbook trackpads. Because to these advancements, the mouse may be safely left at home. The trackpad could, in my opinion, be much larger.

Performance

The 13-inch surface laptop has Intel’s ninth Core-i processor generation in several variations — our test unit included a Core-i7 CPU with eight gigabytes of RAM. The built-in SSD has a capacity of 256 gigabytes, but there are alternative models with capacities ranging from 128 gigabytes to one terabyte and up to 16 gigabytes of RAM.

1632848032_653_Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-vs-Dell-XPS-13-2020

The model in front of us has no issues with common productivity activities like email editing, online surfing, or Word or Excel documents. It may also be used to work in Lightroom or Photoshop, albeit 16 GB of RAM is recommended for such operations.

It’s also no difficulty to watch 4K material. It’s also feasible to play games with subpar quality, although the laptop isn’t particularly built for serious gamers. It also doesn’t want to be.

When the laptop becomes a little busier, the underbelly becomes quite heated. The fan starts up to cool the laptop, which is thankfully scarcely audible. Under low load, the fan is turned off, and the laptop runs entirely quietly.

Life of the battery

In terms of battery life, the laptop falls towards the center of the pack. The laptop can only survive for a working day or roughly eight hours in “typical” usage with 50 to 60 percent display brightness and the standard office software such as Slack, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, Mail, Word, and other productivity tools.

Because everyone uses the computer differently, it’s impossible to generate entirely exact running time estimates. After all, owing to quick-charging technology, if the battery becomes low, it can be swiftly replenished.

The smartphone gets charged from zero to roughly 80% in less than an hour. However, in order to charge the gadget rapidly, the computer must be turned off.

Verdict

The Surface Laptop 3 from Microsoft isn’t flawless – we should emphasize the limited connectivity and short battery life. Apart from having enough power for a work laptop, the gadget offers a great touch display and input devices like a trackpad and keyboard. Unfortunately, some other manufacturers lay less focus on these vital components.

As previously said, the Surface Laptop is well-made and enables for the replacement of the SSD, which is uncommon in most goods.

Another bonus is the clean Windows installation: Microsoft’s Surface devices are free of bloatware and trial versions. Owners of Lenovo, Dell, or HP notebooks are well aware of how irritating this software can be.

Overall, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 falls short of the Dell XPS 13, but if you’re looking for a nice quality laptop in a lower price range, the Surface Laptop 3 is worth considering.

The Surface Laptop 3 with a 13.5-inch touchscreen costs $970 when equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor, eight gigabytes of RAM, and a 128-gigabyte solid-state drive.

The “dell xps vs microsoft surface laptop 2” is a comparison between the two laptops, with the Dell XPS 13 coming out on top.
