That’s right, you guessed it! Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 Dev Channel Insider Preview build.
There are a few major new updates and enhancements in Build 22509, which are the result of direct input from Insiders who have been testing Windows 11 since June.
The Start menu will now have a more adaptable structure, and the option to show the clock on secondary displays will be restored.
So there’s a lot to look forward to, and we’re going to dive further into these changes and how they’ll affect the new OS.
Microsoft has included additional options for customizing the Start menu.
The taskbar and Start, with their lack of utility, were undoubtedly among the most criticized parts of Windows 11.
However, with this new build, everything will be different. By raising the size of each region of the Start menu, users may now set it to display either more pinned applications or more recent documents.
That means you can immediately access Start settings by right-clicking on Start and selecting the More pins or More suggestions layout option to display an extra row of pins or recommendations, respectively.
Another major change is that when you connect a secondary monitor, your clock and date will now be shown on the secondary monitor’s or displays’ taskbars for easy viewing.
Because Microsoft has just recently begun to roll out this modification, it is not yet accessible to all Insiders. Other enhancements and modifications made to Windows 11 with this release include:
- Three high priority alerts will now be stacked and presented at the same time for applications that send notifications for calls, reminders, or alarms that use Windows notifications in the OS. This implies you may get up to four alerts at once — three high-priority notifications and one normal-priority notice. [This update is still being rolled out, so it isn’t accessible to all Insiders just yet.] [We’ll monitor feedback and see how it goes before making it available to everyone.]
- As part of the continuing work to migrate Control Panel settings to the Settings app:
- Advanced sharing options (including Network discovery, File and printer sharing, and public folder sharing) have been moved to a new page in the Settings app called Advanced Network Settings.
- The device specific pages under Printers & Scanners in Settings have been updated to provide additional information about your printer or scanner directly in Settings when available.
- Some of the Control Panel’s network and device settings entry points will now take you to the appropriate pages in Settings.
- The Installed Apps tab in Settings now has a new option to order the list from Name (Z to A), while the former “Alphabetically” option has been renamed Name (A to Z).
- If you switch on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi while in airplane mode, the system will remember. The radios will remember your option and stay on the next time you utilize airplane mode, making it simpler to listen to headphones and stay connected while traveling.
- Within its virtualized environment, Windows Sandbox now enables reboot (for example, if you were to click the Restart option under the Power button in Start).
Fixes
Of course, we had to go to the Fixes section, where we learned that when the system scaling is set to 125 percent, the Start, Search, Task View, Widgets, and Chat icons in the Taskbar should no longer appear surprisingly huge.
This isn’t the only thing Microsoft addressed with this update. The following are the remaining fixes:
[Taskbar]
- If you continually click the Windows key + (the number corresponding to an app icon’s position in the Taskbar), instead of stopping at the final window, you should now cycle through the program’s windows.
- Narrator will now provide information about the Desktops when the focus is placed to the Task View button and the Desktops flyout displays.
- In recent flights, several Insiders experienced an explorer.exe problem linked to upgrading badges in the Taskbar.
[Input]
- When the language is set to Chinese, handwriting should function again.
- In recent flights, we fixed a problem with the mouse that was causing certain Insiders to suffer a bugcheck during sleep (making it appear as if the computer had rebooted).
- The Chinese Simplified IME candidates have been updated to be center aligned with the candidate window height.
- Invoking the touch keyboard in PowerShell has been fixed, and it should now function.
[Windowing]
- When you move your mouse back and forth between various desktops in Task View, the thumbnails and content area will no longer shrink suddenly.
- CompactOverlay should now function in this version (aka the option that some apps use to create a small always on top window).
- When closing a snap group of three or more windows in Task View, explorer.exe would sometimes crash due to a race issue.
- When clicking down on a corner of the New Desktop button, the unexpected tilt motion was removed.
- When right clicking a Desktop in Task View, a fix was made to solve an underlying problem that caused the context menu to move down to the mouse instead of away from the mouse.
- In recent flights, a high-impact DWM crash was fixed.
[Settings]
- On the Installed Apps tab in Settings, some overlapping text for some languages was fixed.
- When using the Installed Apps page in grid format, clicking the Uninstall button now displays a confirmation popup.
- ms-settings:installed-apps has been updated. To solve cases where existing links anticipate the latter to go to a list of installed applications, for example, when choosing the App Settings option after right clicking a UWP app in Start, the URI will now be ms-settings:appsfeatures.
[Other]
- When some Insiders attempted to update to recent Dev Channel versions, they received the error 0x8007001f.
- Fixed an issue where certain PCs with the error number 0x80070002 were unable to install fresh builds or other upgrades.
- When installing updated releases, a problem caused certain devices to roll back with error code 0xc1900101-0x4001c.
- I worked on resolving an issue that caused the Wi-Fi connection to be lost after waking up from a nap.
NOTE
Some of the changes found in Insider Preview versions from the active development branch may find their way into service updates for Windows 11, which was released to the public on October 5th.
Issues that have been identified
[General]
- Users upgrading to newer Dev Channel builds using the newest Dev Channel ISO from Builds 22000.xxx or older may see the following warning message: Flight Signed is the build you’re attempting to install. Enable flight signing to continue installing. If you see this notice, hit the Enable button, restart your computer, and try again with the update.
[Start]
- When using Search from Start or the Taskbar, you may be unable to input text in certain circumstances. If the problem persists, open the Run dialog box by pressing WIN + R on the keyboard, then dismiss it.
[Taskbar]
- When switching input methods, the Taskbar will sometimes flicker.
[Search]
- The Search panel may not open after clicking the Search button on the Taskbar. Restart the “Windows Explorer” process and reopen the search panel if this happens.
With Microsoft Edge and Narrator, the Redmond tech giant has also been working on a number of online surfing enhancements.
In particular, typing in edit fields should now be quicker, more helpful information will be displayed while browsing across the site, and Narrator will deliver a more consistent navigation experience.
